Most people would like to be a millionaire. But what is the best way to get your hands on a million bucks? In my opinion, the answer is simple: investing. One of the best ways to invest -- and almost certainly the easiest -- is with an exchange-traded fund (ETF). Let's examine one of my favorites, the Vanguard Growth ETF (NYSEMKT: VUG). Halfway through the year, the S&P 500 was up 15.3%, including dividends. Despite these impressive gains the bull market has been relatively boring this year. There have been just 14 trading days with gains of 1% or more. There has been just a single 2% up day in 2024. And there have only been 7 days of down 1% or worse. Small moves in both directions.
As of 2024, the maximum Social Security benefit any retired worker can get based on the current formula is $4,873 per month. This translates to about $58,500 per year in inflation-protected retirement income. However, actually getting the maximum possible benefit requires a very specific and rare combination of factors. Here are the three things you would need to do in order to claim a $4,873 monthly Social Security benefit, and why most people don't.

While specific trends have been singled out as clear-cut catalysts for this bull market rally, including the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and companies enacting stock splits , the prevailing theme has been investors' wil

Everyone should be looking beyond Social Security to fund their retirement. Consistently contributing even just a modest amount of money to an IRA, for instance, can result in a surprisingly big nest egg later in life. Even the Social Security Administration says its program was never intended to be anyone's sole source of retirement income. However, a handful of people are collecting surprisingly big Social Security checks of $4,873 every month.

U.S. wireless carrier AT&T (NYSE: T) is a polarizing stock among investors. Shares are down nearly 30% in price over the past decade, which is a tough pill to swallow. However, include AT&T's famous high-yielding dividend and shares generated a 50% positive return. Indeed, dividends can have a powerful impact on investment returns. Moreso than returns, retirees depend on dividends for the passive income they offer, which can help pay living expenses.

A whopping 88% of current retirees depend on their benefits, according to a 2024 poll from Gallup, with 60% of that group saying Social Security is a major income source. Some retirees even rely on their benefits as their only source of income. Even if you have a robust nest egg, if you end up living a long lifespan, there's a chance your savings will run out eventually.

In the roughly 24-month period leading up to their all-time high in December 2014, shares of Spirit Airlines (NYSE: SAVE) skyrocketed 400%. But it's been a turbulent journey since then, with the stock plunging 96% from that peak price. Even this year, the airline stock is down a gut-wrenching 78%. Investing in real estate is one of the many ways to start generating passive income. There are lots of options within that sector. The easiest for beginners is to invest in real estate investment trusts ( REITs ). Most REITs pay higher-yielding dividends that steadily rise over time, making them ideal passive income investments.
Most investors would be happy with a stock that doubled in five years. They'd likely be ecstatic about a stock that tripled during the same period. Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has skyrocketed more than 30x over the last five years. I'm unsure what emotion adequately describes how investors feel about this phenomenal return. Some expected Nvidia's remarkable momentum to accelerate after the company's 10-for-1 stock split conducted following the market close on June 7.

The limit has just increased to $7,000 for those under 50, up from $6,500 in 2023. However, according to Fidelity's analysis of IRA balances at the end of 2023, over 400,000 account owners have achieved this milestone.
