The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) is widely regarded as the best gauge for the overall U.S. stock market. That's because it includes 500 large companies that span all 11 stock market sectors, representing approximately 80% of domestic equities by market value. That scope and diversity makes the index a bellwether for U.S. stocks. The S&P 500 is currently doing something it does every four years: Reacting to the results of another U.S. presidential election.

Investing in real estate can be an excellent way to generate passive income. The great news is that you don't need much money to get started. While buying a rental property could set you back more than $100,000 after factoring in the down payment, closing costs, and repairs, other real estate investments have a much, much lower initial investment. Real estate investment trusts ( REITs ) offer some of the lowest investment minimums.
US private equity firm Advent International has reached an agreement to sell Indian packaging giant Manjushree Technopack to Hong Kong-based investment firm PAG for an enterprise value nearing $1bn, according to a report by Reuters. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) index is up by 30% over the past year, and one-fifth of that gain is attributable to a single stock: Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA). The chip giant has delivered a return of 186% over the last 12 months, and with a valuation of $3.6 trillion, it represents 7% of the total value of the S&P 500. But Nvidia isn't alone. Few if any money managers command attention on Wall Street quite like Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A) (NYSE: BRK.B) CEO Warren Buffett. Since ascending to the role as Berkshire's chief in the mid-1960s, the aptly named "Oracle of Omaha" has overseen a scorching-hot cumulative return in his company's Class A shares (BRK.A) of nearly 5,700,000%. Nearly doubling up the annualized total return of the benchmark S&P 500 spanning six decades is bound to get a money manager noticed.
Walmart (NYSE: WMT) stock is the second-best-performing investment in the Dow Jones Industrial Average this year. That result might seem strange given that the retailer isn't nearly as profitable as the AI-powered tech giants that have dominated headlines in the past year. Walmart does have exposure to some attractive tech spaces, of course. But it is still a retailing stock, with all the limited growth and earnings opportunities that come with operating in that competitive sector.
Among the companies benefiting from artificial intelligence (AI) entering the mainstream are semiconductor giants Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) and Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA). The arrival of AI supercharged sales for both businesses as customers sought the necessary hardware and software to implement AI into their organizations. As a result, Broadcom stock skyrocketed to a 52-week high of $186.42 in October, a dramatic change from the $90.31 low it was at last December.
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) stuck to tradition when it reported third-quarter earnings last week. By this, I mean the tech giant went on to once again beat earnings expectations -- it's done this for at least the previous four quarters. It's easy to understand why Nvidia has been delivering such excellent surprises to investors quarter after quarter. The company is the leader in one of today's hottest markets: artificial intelligence (AI).

Investors get a peek into what hedge funds are doing with their money every quarter. The SEC requires institutional investors to file a 13F once they pass $100 million in assets. Oct.10 was a big day for Social Security this year. That morning, the Social Security Administration announced a number of key changes to the program. But while the program's rules are shifting in 2025, one specific Social Security rule is staying the same. And it's a rule that's been hurting retirees for years. Meanwhile, here are the big changes that are happening come January.

Meanwhile, 28% of Americans are part of lower-income households, and only 19% are considered upper class. If you're wondering whether you're upper, middle, or lower class, the reality is that it depends on not just your income but your household size and where you live.

Last month, the Social Security Administration announced that beneficiaries will receive a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2025. That revelation disappointed many Social Security recipients. In fact, a recent survey conducted by The Motley Fool found that 54% of retired workers believe the 2025 COLA is insufficient. However, it may help Social Security recipients to know exactly how COLAs are calculated.

Crystal balls are said to be useful items, but they are very hard for investors to come by. For better or worse, investors in Plug Power (NASDAQ: PLUG) stock have something very close to a crystal ball: hard numbers, laid out by management and by Wall Street analysts, telling us where Plug Power stock should be in five years. Are you planning to invest in America's best-known pioneer in hydrogen fuel cells and intending to own the stock for the long term rather than simply trade in and out?
Conventional trading wisdom suggests selling half your position when a speculative growth stock doubles. This "sell-half" rule helps lock in profits while letting winners ride, protecting investors from the violent reversals common in early stage companies. Yet despite my 106% gain on Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) from my $2.92 average cost basis, built through careful position scaling during market dips, I'm breaking this time-tested rule.
Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) stock gained 4.1% through 9:45 a.m. ET Monday morning after CNBC reported this morning that the U.S. Commerce Department is close to awarding Intel an $8 billion subsidy to assist with expanding its semiconductor chip operations.
