The Twenty Year Itch: My Last VC Investment Out of Brooklyn Bridge Ventures

This is going to be BIG.

Sometime in the next few weeks, I’ll complete my next investment. It will be the 105th deal out of Brooklyn Bridge Ventures, the firm I started back in September 2012, and it will be the last deal I’ll be making out of my third fund. It will also be my last venture capital deal. I think it’s important in this era of building audiences and living in public to acknowledge that no one actually needs to explain the reasons why they’re making career moves or leaving a company.

Nobody Knows Anything, FedWatch Edition

The Big Picture

Imagine you had a device that allowed you to peer into the future. You enter a subject matter into this machine, requesting a specific quantitative measure, and at a specific future time. In other words, Price and Date. The machine whirrs and spins, lights flash, bells ring, and out pops a chart showing a range of answers and their probabilities. You might imagine a machine like that would be worth a lot.

Stock Market Tops, Bottoms & Middles

A Wealth of Common Sense

A reader asks: I’m in my late-30s so I know I should look at this environment as an opportunity to buy at lower prices but I’m sick of the bear market. I got caught up investing in tech in 2020 and 2021 so I’m down way more than the S&P 500 (probably down 25-30% from my previous highs). It would help to hear your best and worst-case scenarios between new all-time highs this year and a 1970s environment where we.

Want More Jobs? Raise the Minimum Wage

The Big Picture

I have been writing about issues with the minimum wage for (it seems like) decades. During that time, consuming lots of academic research, I reached a few logically supported conclusions. The least contentious of which is that modest increases in minimum wages increase economic activity and create jobs. But there are other surprises around the minimum wage.

Concentration in the Stock Market

A Wealth of Common Sense

Finance is like fashion. Wait long enough and the same arguments come back in style. We have the same quarrels about finance topics every few years. Active vs. passive. The death of the 60/40 portfolio. Is this a bubble? Is this the top (or bottom)? Another one that’s cropped up again this year is are the market’s gains too concentrated?

How Interest Rates & Inflation Impact Stock Market Valuations

A Wealth of Common Sense

On Monday the S&P 500 closed at a little more than 4,100. That’s a level the index first hit in May 2021. A lot has changed in the intervening two years from a market perspective. This is a snapshot of how things looked back in May 2021: Fed funds rate: 0% (on the floor) 10 year treasury yield: 1.6% (generationally low) Inflation rate: 4.2% (uncomfortable but still felt transitory) Mortgage rates: 3.0% (ridicu.

The Big Picture

At least they told us what they were going to do. As much as critics of the Federal Reserve have been up in arms over the fastest rate hiking cycle in modern history, no one can claim it to be a surprise. Jerome Powell & Co. have continually warned that they are aggressively fighting inflation with a 5% target. They said it in Fed minutes, they said it in pressers, they said it in speeches; we just took them figuratively, not literally.

I have been a reader of Jamie Catherwood’s Investor Amnesia since it launched. It is always filled with interesting reminders from the past. Investor Amnesia is a wonderful reminder that we tend to forget that which came before. Ray Dalio put it even more starkly, noting that nothing is truly unprecedented , and we tend to use that word to refer to those things we have not experienced in our lifetimes.
