So I was really investmentbanking. What was that experience like? What was your trading career like?
RITHOLTZ: So, that makes the finance sector very different than the rest of the stockmarket? ADMATI: Well, the banking especially because the creditors in banking are particularly passive. In the financial crisis, let’s remember, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley became bank holding companies.
It was between corporate law and investmentbanking. KLINSKY: You know, and what we were doing was basically advising Goldman clients how to take their own family businesses back off the stockmarket. I did work on the very first principal investment that Goldman ever did. RITHOLTZ: Oh, really? KLINSKY: Yeah.
I wanted to see the world, and whether it was investmentbanking, or basket weaving really had absolutely no bearing on my decision. One is if your outperformance is related to an asset class that’s illiquid, when you are too big, you’re going to run out of assets to invest it. I worked really hard. I was born white.
ASWATH DAMODARAN, KERSCHNER FAMILY CHAIR IN FINANCE EDUCATION, NYU STERN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS: I’m glad to be back. And the only reason I can think for why dividends became the key way of returning cash is I went back to the history of markets. Bond markets preceded stockmarkets. I know you will also.

So I I, I started off in that, but I mainly learned that I didn’t really wanna do investmentbanking because it didn’t hit on my core skillset, which was like engineering back down quantitative techniques and tools. It was accounting, investmentbanking and consulting. And that’s what I did.
Let’s talk a little bit about your educational background. 00:07:48 [Speaker Changed] Most private equity firms of any consequence were built in New York by people who had been investment bankers. None of our people had been in investmentbanking. So we were investing our own money alongside our investors.
And few do it better than Neil does in terms of putting together a global view of what’s happening in the economy, what’s happening around the world, what’s happening with the Fed, and what’s happening with the stockmarket. So a lot of the investmentbanking analysts had already lined up their gig.
